"Phobia, an extreme, irrational fear of a specific object or situation. A phobia is classified as a type of anxiety disorder, since anxiety is the chief symptom experienced by the sufferer. Phobias are thought to be learned emotional responses. ... Psychotherapy may also be useful in the treatment of phobias." - Source, Brittanica
Phobias can have many different triggers, including snakes, height, spiders, etc. The anxiety symptoms often affect the quality of life of those who suffer from phobias as they try to avoid the triggers, and are somewhat on a constant alert mode.
Some well known methods of treatments include psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, systematic desensitization. These treatments often take a long time and many visits, with varying degrees of success. Alternative therapies include hypnotherapy and meridian tapping such as TFT and EFT.
Since the very first inception, meridian tapping techniques was known for it's superb effectiveness in helping patients getting over phobias and fear. In fact, the shocking rapid and success rate is what led to further inquiries and refinement of the meridian tapping techniques by Dr. Roger Callahan. Dr.Callahan's techniques and algorithm was called TFT (Thought Field Therapy) and is still being taught and offered even after his passing. This TFT was later streamlined by his students, and continued to spread worldwide, primarily as EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) by Gary Craig.
In my personal experience (as many other EFT Tapping practitioners have anecdotally reported), mild fears, single and specific phobias can often be taken care of in one session. Compound anxiety/phobias is more complex. However, even so the anxiety level and panic-like symptoms eases drastically, and clients were able to expand their emotional control after each sessions. If you are ready to get over your phobic responses, ready to end the life of avoidance, please explore this site further as well as visit this EFT for Phobias, Facebook Page.
What Happens During the Session
1. Your history, background, reaction and triggers of phobic responses, intake information will be reviewed.
2. If you already know the basics of Meridian Tapping, we can get straight to working with your symptoms. If you are new to Tapping, I will give you personal instructions of how to do Tapping. Learning this in itself is valuable, as you will be equipped with a powerful anxiety management tool to use anytime anywhere, without any cost.
3. We will explore together, your triggers, your symptoms, your responses, your thoughts, feelings, possible origins etc, and work on clearing the uncomfortable responses as they rise.
4. As we continue to clear/calm down the strong responses, your nervous system is forming a new neural pathway, and the source of phobia becomes less of a trigger. (It is Very Freeing!)
5. We do as much as we can during the session, and you will be monitor, guided to keep you as calm as possible during the whole process.
6. As you leave, you are equipped with the Tapping Tool, and you can continue to work on your own should discomfort arise.
7. You are welcome to have a follow up session with me as needed. Many clients have not needed to come back.
Phobia Clients Voice & Case Studies
Client's Voice: "Mitsuko Ito has been treating me for my phobia using EFT techniques. This treatment has drastically changed my life over the course of my therapy. My phobia has controlled me for as long as I can remember; holding me back from truly enjoying so many things or having the courage to experience them to start with. EFT is so easy to use and I've even applied to many additional aspects of my life. Mitsuko uses her gentle force and calm presence to effectively guide you through EFT sessions and teach you how to deal with issues as they come up too. My time with her is priceless." - Kelly
Client's Voice: "This process allowed me to begin to explore deeper into the meaning that I had attached to a traumatic event. As I followed the tapping sequence, it seemed that new thoughts, feelings, and ideas about what had happened to me began to surface. There was a shift of energy flow. I had an unexpected realization that made me very emotional. It was at this moment that I felt we reached the "root" of the issue. I had fully processed and let go of what had surfaced. Afterwards I felt totally and completely calm, even when I thought of the thing that had caused so much anxiety prior to the session. Mitsuko held the space very beautifully and was fully present with me throughout the session. I had known something about EFT prior to working with Mitsuko, but having gone through the process in much greater depth, I feel as though I have a much better feeling about how to tap on my own to work through things. I really appreciated her calm, open and neutral energy that created a space for me to relax and move through the session with ease. I am very grateful!"
Note: Client later reported with enthusiasm that her back pain she had suffered (due to the fracture from the fall) has slowly dissipated, and eventually completely went away in about two weeks after the EFT session.
Case Study: Snake Phobia 1
Client had a 50 minute session for snake phobia. She could not step into her daughter's classroom where the teacher had brought in a snake, and would freeze at the entrance of a pet shop at the sight of a snake.
As we began our session, I have asked, "what would be your response if I told you there's a little snake hiding behind this desk?" - client responded - "I'm out of here." (Distress level 10/10, ready to flee.)
After exploration, tapping, and breathing, I asked, "what would you say now if there's a little snake here?" "Well, I know that's not true so that's nothing." (Distress level 0/10.)
Client was asked to report back going into a pet shop. A few weeks later, client sends in a photo of her holding a Massive Python with the following comment. "I JUST TOUCHED A PHYTON!!!!" Her friend of 30 years later reports, "For her to be touching a huge snake like that..... (shaking head).... ou don't understand....that's just unbelievable...."
Case Study: Snake Phobia 2
Client initially showed up slightly curious and willing to tap for her snake phobia. Client reported other pressing phobias at the time of intake, however, since claustrophobia seemed to be a bigger issue, we started tapping on this. As basic tapping instructions were shared, we have explored early memories of this claustrophobia. We came across a memory of around 5 years of age, where client was greatly frightened, being trapped in a bathroom combined with a loud firecracker noise was let out right outside. We have tapped to reduce the intensity of anxiety that was associated with this memory.
Client was assigned some homework, to try to visit "elevators & dark hallways" that have been a big trigger. Following up with email, it was reported that unfortunately there did not seem to be major improvement for the elevators - client was still having strong anxiety. However, client did notice that her snake phobia has interestingly diminished.
3 months later, client came back asking for 2 more sessions to prepare for an upcoming event. This was an opportunity not to be missed, however there was some major concerns. The location with no windows and escape was already giving client so much anxiety, and there was sadness that perhaps he will not be able to take part in the event due to the already projected phobic response. Client was very motivated to attend this event and we have had two 90 min sessions in two days. Before the session, client wasn't sure how the end result would be. However, at the end, client was feeling calm and gained a sense of control that the situation will be handled just fine.
After the event was over, client reported there was no dreaded physical responses (such as feeling sweaty and hot, and the need to get out). Quite interestingly, other people were complaining of heat more than him, and this was a completely new experience for him. Client was very happy!
Client's Voice: "When I told Mitsuko that I hadn’t tried acupuncture yet due to a mild fear of needles, she caught me off guard by asking if I wanted to try “tapping” through it. I had read about EFT before, but had never actually tried it and had no idea where to start. Mitsuko guided me gently and compassionately through a light tapping session on the spot. I had never put much thought into my anxiety about needles or where it came from, but through this impromptu tapping lesson, I discovered the probable cause for my fear and took steps toward putting it to rest. It felt like a weight being lifted off of me, and I could feel the tension leaving my body as we tapped and talked and worked through the issue. I count myself lucky to have “accidentally” learned about tapping from Mitsuko." - K. W.
Client's Voice: "Mitsuko helped me to feel like there is hope that I can get past a life-long phobia. I had completely given up and given in, allowing it to control my life in so many ways. I was amazed at the feelings she was able to evoke and then make disappear with EFT. She has a very calm and sincere demeanor that makes it very easy to open up to her. I was able to find underlying issues that had never occurred to me and work on those as well, with very positive results. I feel so lucky to have found her and this valuable tool." - K. B.

Whys, Hows & Research on EFT for Phobias
As a bodyworker, somatic educator, who has the priviledge to physically touch client's body directly (pressing, kneeding, stretching, melting etc) I have my own way of explaining. A lot of my theory is formed through my reading Japanese literature and access to the Easter culture as well. I am well aware that bringing in the "meridians" are often not the most relatable and convincing, so I will not go into that on this page (but if you look around, I have attempted to share some of my view points in other parts of this website.) Instead, I will list some links that have a more Western, modern, and scientific approach. Please feel free to ask me though. I do love sharing! (But I don't want to put people off either :)
